ANAS Institute of Biophysics hosted an educational seminar

On October 12, 2021, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, an educational seminar on “Take your researches to the next level” was held.

At the seminar organized for undergraduates of the Institute, researcher of the laboratory “Structures, Dynamics and Function of Biomolecules” Arzu Aydamirova informed seminar participants with the rules of the Clarivate Analytics information platform “Web of Science”, related information resources, as well as the rules for presenting articles to this network, the use of foreign publications and other opportunities.

Then she spoke about the methods of combating “predatory journals”. Speaking about the existing problems associated with the publication of articles in international scientific journals, she stressed the importance of paying attention to ”predatory“ metrics such as ”Global Impact Factor“, ”International Impact Factor“, ”General Impact Factor“, ”Cosmos Impact Factor”, International Journal Impact Factor” and others.

At the end the questions of the young scientists were answered.

The report of the young scientist was heard

On June 25, 2021, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS the next online scientific seminar was held.

The seminar was opened by the general director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Gasimov, who informed the participants about the topic of the report and the young scientist.

Then the engineer of the laboratory Structure, dynamics and function of biomolecules Aytaj Mammadova presented a report on the topic “Principles of fluorescence: Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence”. In her report, the young scientist gave a detailed description of the hydrophobic clusters of ANS binding to the protein, the studies conducted on the topic, and the results obtained.

At the end of the seminar, the discussions around the topic were held and the questions were answered.

On May 7, 2021, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS the next online scientific seminar was held.

The seminar was opened by the general director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Gasimov, who emphasized the relevance of the topic.

Then, researcher  of the laboratory Ecological biophysics Sevinj Huseynova has made a report on the topic “Oxidative modification of red blood cells induced by sodium nitrite as a measure of its toxicity”. She firstly gave detailed information on the issue, then answered questions of the participants.

At the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS the scientific  report of the young scientist was heard

On April 9, 2021, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS the next online scientific seminar  was held.

The seminar was opened by the general director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Gasimov, who gave information about the young scientist to the participants of the seminar.

At the seminar, the report of the junior research scientist of the laboratory Structure, dynamics and function of biomolecules, PhD. student Laman Suleymanova on the topic ”Structural-dynamic changes occurring in protein monolayers”  was heard.

In her report, she spoke in detail about the monolayer protein and its production, the principle of operation of the Langmuir-blodgett device, the effect of Cu2 + ions on monolayer fibroin, experiments conducted on the topic and the results obtained. According to the young scientist, all biological processes occurring in organisms occur either directly through the process of regulation, in which proteins participate, or by their regulation. The various functions performed by proteins are closely related to their molecular structure and dynamics. Therefore, one of the most important problems of biophysics is the study of the relationship between the structure, dynamics and function of proteins.

She noted that widespread neurodegenerative diseases all over the world, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Prion, etc. occurs as a result of amyloid formation and stressed the importance of discovering the mechanisms of amyloid release and exploring ways to prevent it. L.Suleymanova noted that during the joint work in the laboratory, the effect of Cu+2 ions on the fibroin protein was studied and the presence of cu+2 ions in the composition of amyloids was found.

At the end of seminar, the discussions around the topic were held and the questions were answered.

At the Institute of Biophysics the first online seminar dedicated to the “Day of Science”  was held

On March 12, 2021, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS the first online scientific seminar dedicated to the “Day of Science” was held.

At the seminar, the report of the leading research scientist of the laboratory ecological biophysics, PhD. in Biology, associate professor Mursal Dadashov on the topic “Conformational changes occurring in plasma proteins under the influence of electric field of high tension (50HZ)” was heard.

In his report M.Dadashov gave detailed information about how structural changes caused by a high-voltage electric field with a frequency of 50 Hz in blood plasma proteins are reflected in the native fluorescence of proteins, as well as about the possible mechanisms of these changes. He noted that the elucidation of the causal relationships of the interaction of electromagnetic fields and radiation with living beings, the mechanisms of the influence of these factors on protein structures, which are one of the urgent problems of biophysics at the level of modern physicochemical and biological scientific development, has a certain scientific and practical significance from the point of view of  in terms of determining the mechanisms and ways of implementing structural and conformational changes occurring in proteins under the influence of these factors.

The report of the young scientist was heard

On February 5, the Laboratory of Integrative Biology of the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS organized an online seminar on the topic “Abstract of alternative proteomes obtained as a result of alternative splicing and frameshifting”.

At the online seminar, which was organized on the “Zoom” platform, the junior researcher of the Laboratory of Integrative biology, the winner of the double doctoral program organized jointly by ANAS and Montpellier University of France for the 2019-2022 academic years, Zarifa Osmanli spoke on the topic.

She noted that the main research area of the Laboratory of Structural Bioinformatics and Molecular Modeling (Institute of Cell Biology, CNRS) is the study of the structure and functions of proteins using bioinformatics programs based on their amino acid sequences. Emphasizing that there are two main regions of proteins, the globular and the non-globular, she noted that the non-globular, in turn, are divided into aggregation-prone motifs, intrinsically disordered regions and tandem repeating subgroups. She informed that the laboratory is currently creating, improving and integrating bioinformatics programs for a large-scale analysis of the listed areas and subgroups, and also pointed out that the main focus of her Ph.D. is the study of dark proteomes using existing bioinformatics programs and writing new programs.

According to the reporter, many mechanisms of transcription and post-transcription lead to the formation of new proteins and isoforms of these proteins. Among these mechanisms, a special place is occupied by the mechanisms of “Alternative splicing” and “frameshifting”. The structural and functional analysis of alternative proteomes obtained by these mechanisms is the main part of the study. Abstract alternative pre-mRNA proteomes are a widespread mechanism that absorb a variety of proteins in eukaryotic organisms. Comparative analysis of isoform and reference protein sequences is carried out taking into account the possibility of obtaining several isoform proteins formed from a single coding region. Abstract of alternative proteomes is used for in-depth study of genome coding regions, identification of potentially new proteins, and recognition of genome regions that are more affected by evolution. The young scientist also stressed that until recently, it was discovered that “frameshift”, which only leads to the appearance of mutant proteins or premature stop codon, was already a method used to create new proteins in the process of evolution.

After hearing the report,  discussions were held on the subject. The General Director of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Gasimov, deputy director for scientific affairs, Dr. Biology Karim Gasimov, head of the laboratory of Integrative biology, corresponding member of ANAS Ilham Shahmuradov, head of the laboratory Molecular Basis of Integrative Activity of the institute  of Physiology  Arif Mehdiyev and others took part in the discussions.

An employee of the Institute of Biophysics spoke at the Main Health Department

Head of the Laboratory of Ecological Biophysics of the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, Dr. Biology, Professor Tokay Huseynov delivered a lecture at the Baku Main Health Department.

The report was devoted to research based on numerous studies on the impact of one of the environmental factors (selenium status) on the development and pathogenicity of HIV/AIDS, which is part of the Covid-19 genome, Ebola and other RNA viral infections.

Based on existing and scientifically proven research, Tokay Huseynov noted that the lack of selenium (Se) in human food, one of the chemical elements, can lead to the development of the most common viral diseases of our time. He said Hantavirus, Coxsackie, avian flu, Ebola, and other dangerous viral diseases had symptoms similar to COVID-19.

The speaker also stressed that the increasing selenium deficiency in many countries, including Azerbaijan, is caused by a significant deterioration in the ecological situation, which is directly related to anthropogenic human activities, in particular, the intensive development of energy, industry, communications, transport, which causes significant emissions of gas anhydrides into the atmosphere, soil acidity, as well as heavy elements, reduces the mobile forms of selenium absorbed by plants and entering the human body through them.

According to the professor, the use of selenium as a drug (mainly in the form of sodium Selenite) has led to a significant improvement in the condition of patients, and even complete recovery (Coxsackie virus – Keshan, China). He noted that selenium was one of the main drugs in South West Africa that prevented transmission of the disease from HIV to AIDS. In many countries around the world suffering from selenium deficiency, including developed countries and most of Asia, Australia, Africa, as well as in many CIS countries (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc.) and the Baltic States, have adopted state programs to ensure the normalization of selenium status at the legislative level.

Speaking about the fact that Covid-19 is a vascular disease rather than a respiratory one, the speaker stressed that the tragic consequences of the virus were mainly due to blood clots, while sodium selenite had antithrombotic properties and prevented thromboxane formation.

According to the scientist, it was also found that thrombopenia, which is directly related to the development of stroke, occurs during infection with the COVID-19 virus: “All this suggests that the susceptibility to coronavirus and its complications depends on the degree of selenium intake into the body. Sodium Selenite itself can be effective in the treatment of this disease,” T. Huseynov said.

Scientist from Iran made a scientific report on “CRISPR gene editing and future perspectives” at the Institute of Biophysics

On October 18, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, an educational seminar on “CRISPR gene editing and future perspectives” was held.

The seminar was opened by the Deputy Director on Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Biophysics, Ph.D. in Biological sciences Karim Gasimov, who then gave word to scientist of the Zanjan Medical University Dr. Saeed-Kaboli.

In his report the professor gave detailed information about CRISPR, history of genome editing, global importance of the CRISPR in medicine, and versatility of the CRISPR-cas9.

At the end of seminar, the discussions around the topic were held and the questions were answered.

On October 4, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS next seminar was held. At the seminar the reports of the employees who took part in the “VI Congress of Russian Biophysicists” were heard.

The seminar was opened by the director of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, Professor Oktay Gasymov, who emphasized the importance of holding regular seminars in this format.

At the seminar conducted by the method of exchange of opinions, reports of the head of the laboratory of Ecological Biophysics, Dr. in Biology, Prof. Tokay Huseynov on “Comparative evaluation of changes in the activity of glutathione peroxidase and catalase in the isolated human red blood cells under nitrite impact”, Ph.D. Ruhiyya Guliyeva on “Chemiluminescence of blood serum as an express method in the evaluation of nitrite intoxication”; j.r.s. Sevil Maharramova on “The hemolysis resistance of human erythrocytes under the action of electric field of high tension (50HZ)”; s.r.  Arzu Aydamirova on “Biomarker analysis of lung cancer using human plasma FTIR specters” were heard.

During the seminar, young scientists of the laboratory “Structure, Dynamics and Function of Biomolecules” also made thesis reports:  Aytaj Guliyeva on “Characterization of hydrophobic clusters of sericin by ANS: steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence”, Aida Mammadzade on “Characteristic features of aggregation kinetics of fibroin solution”, Laman Suleymanova on “Time-dependent recombination kinetics of free radicals in fully hydrated fibroin induced by UV-irradiation”.

In closing, view of exchange was held on topics, sounded remark, opinion and suggestions.

On July 18, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, an educational seminar on “Recommendations for writing articles in international scientific journals, how to avoid from the “predatory journals”, search capabilities of the Web of Science platform” was held.

At the seminar, researcher of the laboratory “Structures, Dynamics and Function of Biomolecules”, Ph.D. student of the Institute of Physics of ANAS, Arzu Aydamirova informed seminar participants with the rules of effective use of the platform “Web of Science”. The ways of searching and presenting scientific articles were also demonstrated.

At the end the questions of the seminar participants were answered.

Training on “Interactive search on EBSCOhost platform” was held

On June 21, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS was held training on “Interactive search on EBSCOhost platform”, organized jointly with the Azerbaijan Library Information Society and the Central Scientific Library of ANAS.

Speaking at the event, Director of ALIC and head of the Department of innovative projects of the CSL Jamila Yusifova gave detailed information to the participants of the training on how to effectively use e-books and databases on the EBSCOhost platform. Speaking about the opportunities offered by the platform to researchers, she vividly demonstrated the principle of work.

Member of the Institute of Biophysics delivered a scientific report at ASPU

On May 29, 2019, member of the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, leading research scientist of the laboratory ecological biophysics, PhD., associate professor Mursal Dadashov delivered a scientific report on the topic “Impact of the electromagnetic field on the human body” at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University.

Speaking to the teaching staff and students of the faculty of “Physics and technology”, he gave detailed information, on the electromagnetic field, its sources, biological effects, and influence.

An event dedicated to the “Day of Science” was held

On March 14 and 15, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of a seminar dedicated to the “Day of Science” was held.

Director of the Institute, correspondent member of ANAS, Professor Oktay Gasymov opened the event with the introductory word and informed the participants of the seminar with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated April 9, 2018, on the establishment of the “Day of Science” and about the approved Action Plan by the Scientific Research Coordination Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated January 17, 2019.

At the seminar devoted to the topic “Current problems of molecular biophysics and molecular biochemistry; future perspectives” at first made a speech the head of the laboratory of the Ecological Biophysics of the Institute, Dr. in Biology, Prof. Tokay Huseynov, who spoke in detail about the actual problems of modern biophysics and biochemistry in Azerbaijan science. Then j.r.s. of the laboratory “Structure, dynamics and function of biomolecules” Ramiya Hasanova presented a report on the topic “Components of Cell Membranes and Their Distinctive Features”.

On the second day of the event, presentations on popular science reports were continued with the participation of scientists and specialists. First, head of the laboratory of “Integrative biology” of the Institute of Biophysics, doctor of Biological Sciences, corresponding member of ANAS Ilham Shahmuradov made a slide presentation on “Integrative biology and bioinformatics”. Then, young scientists made reports: Hava Adli the student of the Department of Life science of the Khazar University on “Effect of chronic periodontal therapy on microbiome of GCF (gingival crevicular fluid)”, Najafaliyeva Shalala from the Baku State University on “New Method of preparation Microelectrode Holders “, Zarifa Osmanli from the Institute of Biophysics on “Anti-sense transcripts”.

Concluding the event, Deputy Director for scientific affairs of the Institute of Biophysics, Dr. of Biological Sciences Karim Gasimov noted the importance of holding such events and thanked the seminar participants.

Educational seminar on “My first scholarship” was held

On March 14, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, an educational seminar for young specialists was held.

At the seminar, organized jointly with the Council of young scientists and specialists of the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS and the Central Botanical Garden, the report of the Chairman of the CYSS of the Central Botanical Garden of ANAS, Ph.D. Farid Seyfullayev on “My first scholarship” was heard.

During the seminar, which was conducted by an exchange of views, F.Seyfullayev spoke about his personal experience on the topic, gave detailed information about the scholarship programs, told in detail how to choose the documents according to the requirements, about the methods of registration and how to get free education abroad.

The seminar was attended by students of SABAH group of Baku State University that are practiced at the Institute, young scientists, doctoral and master students.

The report of the young scientist was heard

On March 5, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences was held next seminar.

The seminar was opened by director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Oktay Gasymov, who spoke  about the importance of the topic and the necessity of conducting modern research in this direction, and then gave word to the head of the laboratory of the Ecological biophysics, Dr. Biology, prof. Tokay Huseynov. In his speech, the professor gave information about the young scientist and spoke about the research conducted on this topic.

Then was heard the report of the junior research scientist of the laboratory “Ecological Biophysics” Zarifa Osmanli on the topic “Molecular-bioinformatics analysis of the prion gene in buffalo populations (Anatolian Murrah), molecular level study of selenoproteins and their role in cancer diseases”.

First reporter gives information about the conducted researches on prion diseases, further spoke about the analysis of the ORF region of PRNP gene encoding PrP protein associated with prion diseases in buffalo populations by bioinformatics methods, estimation of post-translational modification probabilities of PrP protein and comparative analysis with cow PRNP gene.

Young scientist also told about the possibility of applying bioinformatics methods for collaborative work in the laboratory, gave detailed information about the 21st and 22nd amino acids, their incorporation into proteins, the study of selenoproteins at the molecular level and their current state at cancers diseases in recent studies.

In conclusion, the discussion was made, questions were answered.

A seminar on “Modified wet-spun polycaprolactone fibers for controlled drug release, improved cell adhesion, and proliferation” was held

On February 19, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS was held next seminar.

The event was opened by the Deputy Director for scientific affairs of the Institute, Doctor of Biological Sciences Karim Gasimov, who gave information about the young scientist to the participants of the seminar.

Then was heard the report of the junior research scientist of the laboratory “Molecular and cellular biochemistry” of the Institute of Biophysics Elbay Akif Malikmammadov on the topic “Modified wet-spun polycaprolactone fibers for controlled drug release, improved cell adhesion, and proliferation”.

In his report the young scientist gave information about characterization and surface modification of wet spun PCL scaffolds and chemical modifications made on prepared wet spun PCL fibers. With a slide presentation, vividly demonstrate his in vitro cell culture experiments. According to him, these studies will become a model for the rapid restoration of bone damage and the creation of an artificial bone system in the future.

At the end, discussions around the topic were held and the questions were answered.

A seminar on “Transcription status of eukaryotic genomes and promoters: new facts – new concepts” was held

On January 29, 2019, at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS was held next seminar.

Then, head of the Laboratory of Integrative Biology of the Institute of Biophysics, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Corresponding Member of ANAS Ilham Ayyub Shahmuradov has made a report on the topic “Transcription status of eukaryotic genomes and promoters: new facts – new concepts”.

I.Shahmuradov gave detailed information about genomes and genes, genome expression, RNA polymerases, and promoters.

Scientists from Iran made a report at the Institute of Biophysics

On January 11, 2019, scientists from the Ardabil University of the Islamic Republic of Iran made a report at the Institute of Biophysics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

Opening of the seminar was done by director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Oktay Gasymov, who then gave word to scientists of the Medical faculty of Ardebil University.

First, Rouhallah Moradpour delivered a report on “Combination therapy with Mir-143 and doxorubicin synergistically suppressed Osteosarcoma proliferation and cell growth”. In his report, he gave detailed information about Mir-143 and the therapeutic role of doxorubicin in breast cancer and osteosarcoma.

Then, Mahshid Damandan made a presentation on the topic “The Synergism Effects miR-143” and presented comprehensive information on the topic under discussion.

In conclusion, scientists from Iran answered the questions of the seminar participants and noted the feasibility of a joint study of issues of common interest.

In addition, discussions were held on the establishment of future scientific cooperation between the three institutions – the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, the Khazar University and the Ardebil University of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A seminar on  “Thyrosinkinase Receptors of Human cells: Functions, Future Perspectives” was held

Today the deputy director on scientific affairs of Institute of Biophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, head of the laboratory “Molecular and cellular biochemistry”, Dr.Sci in biology Karim Guli Gasimov delivered report on the topic “Thyrosinkinase Receptors of Human Cells: Functions, Future Perspectives”.

The event was opened by the director of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Oktay Gasimov, who emphasized the relevance of the topic.

Then, K. Gasimov gave detailed information about the thyrosinkinase receptors and the components of the signal path.

ANAS Institute of Biophysics held next seminar

On November 20, 2018, at the Institute of Biophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan held next seminar.

Opening of the seminar was done by director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Oktay Gasymov.

The participants of the seminar heard the report of Ruhiyya Tahiraga Guliyeva, member of the Institute of Biophysics, Chairman of the Council of young scientists and specialists, senior researcher of the laboratory of “Environmental Biophysics”, doctor of philosophy in biology, on the topic «Hereditary hematological disorders in Azerbaijan and the presence of natural antioxidants in their development».

R. Guliyeva noted that selenium has a special role in antioxidant factors that defend cells and the whole body, and therefore the study of its mechanism of action is relevant not only in Azerbaijan but in the worldwide.

The event was attended by employees, professors, doctoral students and dissertants of the Institute of Biophysics.

An employee of the Institute of Radiobiology of the NAS of Belarus made a presentation at the Institute of Biophysics of the NAS of Azerbaijan

On November 22, 2018, a seminar was held at the Institute of Biophysics with the participation of the head of the Laboratory of Experimental Biological Models on the study of spontaneous and induced carcinogenesis on biological models, operating at the University of Radiobiology, Ph.D.  Natalia Nikolaevna Veyalkina.

First, the director of the institute, Professor Oktay Gasymov briefly informed the guest about the history of the institute that he leads and the research conducted here.  During the talks, the future prospects for cooperation were discussed.

At the seminar, Natalia Nikolaevna presented a report on the topic “The Direction of Scientific Research of the State Scientific Institution of the Institute of Radiobiology of NAS of Belarus”.  In her report N.N.Veyalkina noted that the Institute of Radiobiology is developing methods for extending life and improving its quality in the man-made conditions, including radioactive contamination of the environment.

N.N.Veyalkina’s report aroused great interest of employees and young specialists of the Institute, broad discussions were held around the subject and the necessity of continuing joint scientific researches.

At the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS has been held a seminar on the topic “Diagnostic potential of lung adenocarcinoma disease with IR-spectroscopy of human blood spectroscopy”

A seminar has been held at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS at 10:00 a.m. on 25.10.2018. Scientist of the laboratory “Structures, Dynamics and Function of Biomolecules”, dissertant of the Institute of Physics of ANAS, Arzu Hatemshah Aydamirova delivered a speech on the theme “Diagnostic potential of lung adenocarcinoma disease with IR-spectroscopy of human blood spectroscopy”. Deputy Director on Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS, Ph.D. in Biological sciences Gasimov Karim Guli opened the seminar and stressed the relevance of the topic.

Then A. Aydamirova’s report was heard. She firstly gave detailed information on the issue, then answered questions of the participants. In the end, Deputy Director of the Institute on Scientific Affairs, K.G. Gasimov closed the seminar and thanked the participants.

A Hungarian scientist, Professor Geza Safrany has made a scientific report on “Gene therapy of tumors”

The coordinator of the EU grant on the project # 6282jointly funded by the Ukrainian Center for Science and Technology, Prof. Geza Safrany was invited to Azerbaijan. He visited the Institute of Biophysics from 20 to 21 June 2018 and got acquainted with newly acquired spectroscopic devices. Prof. Geza Safrany held interesting discussions about future collaborative relationships with Professor Oktay Gasimov, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and other scientists of the institute.

Professor Geza Safrany, Head of the Department of Hungarian National Institute of Health, delivered a scientific report on “Gene Therapy” in the conference hall of the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry on June 22.

The event was organized jointly by the Institute of Biophysics, Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry and Institute of Radiation Problems within the framework of the project “Synthesis and study radioprotective properties of complexes tryptophan with some biogenic metals”.

Professor Geza Safrany noted in his report that as a result of researches carried out on mice, gene therapy in tumor diseases, especially in brain tumors, is effective. Because gene therapy enhances the anti-tumor resistance of the organism through the immune system and is more effective when chemotherapy is administered at the same time.

Prof. Geza Safrany answered the questions of the seminar participants at the end of the seminar.
