The Head of the Department for Scientific Institutions of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, Doctor of Mathematical Sciences Mübariz Hacıbəyov, and the leading consultant of the same department, PhD in Biology Babək Əlibəyov, visited the Institute of Biophysics. They were welcomed by the institute’s General Director, Corresponding Member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Oktay Qasımov, Executive Director, Doctor of Biological Sciences Kərim Qasımov, and PhD in Medicine Azad Əbdürəhimov.

During the meeting, the guests were provided with detailed information about the research directions, scientific studies, and future plans of the Institute of Biophysics. Oktay Qasımov stated that the institute's main research areas include cancer diseases and age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. He highlighted that, for the first time at the institute, diagnostic models based on infrared spectra of blood plasma from lung cancer patients have been developed using artificial intelligence. This technology enables the early detection of whether a patient is healthy or has the disease.

The scientific research conducted at the institute covers a broad spectrum. It includes the study of the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, the analysis of biomolecules' structure and function, a comparative analysis of cancer and healthy cell membranes, the development of protein-based nanoparticles, and the creation of drug delivery systems. Additionally, research is being carried out on developing new diagnostic methods based on infrared spectra of blood plasma, investigating the cellular-level effects of anti-cancer agents, identifying cancer-causing gene mutations, and building mathematical models that predict the progression of the disease.

As part of the visit, the guests also toured the institute’s laboratories. They were given detailed information about the scientific research conducted in the laboratories, safety and hygiene measures, the technical condition of equipment, experimental methodologies, and the storage procedures for chemical and biological materials.

At the end of the visit, the guests wished success to the leadership and staff of the Institute of Biophysics in their future scientific activities and emphasized that the institute's research makes a significant contribution to the development of Azerbaijani science.
