Celebrated Professor Hagverdi Jafarov’s 80th jubilee

On May 2, 2018, an event was held at the Institute of Biophysics of ANAS in connection with the 80th anniversary of the birth of the leading scientist of the Laboratory of Environmental Biophysics, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Honored Scientist, Professor Hagverdi Ismail Jafarov. Professors and teachers of the Baku State University, Azerbaijan Medical University, scientists of the Institute of Physiology, Institute of Radiation Problems, Institute of Physics, and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of ANAS took part in the event.

Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Oktay Gasimov informed about the scientific activities of Hagverdi Jafarov in detail. Then the head of the Laboratory of “Environmental Biophysics” Professor Tokay Huseynov delivered a detailed speech on the life and scientific creativity of Professor Hagverdi Jafarov. The invited guests shared their memories.

Hagverdi Ismail Jafarov was born on May 1, 1938, in the village of Boyuk Garabulag (Miskinli) of the Gadabay region. In 1957, he graduated from the secondary school of the village of Miskinli, with a silver medal, and entered the faculty biology of the Azerbaijan State University. In 1962 he graduated from this faculty with honors. In 1963, having passed the exam at the Moscow State University, on a competitive basis he entered the postgraduate course in Biophysics at the Faculty of Biology, and in 1966 he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis.

Since November 1966 he worked as a junior and later as a senior researcher in the laboratory of “Biophysics” at the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 1972, according to the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, the laboratory “Biophysics of reception” was organized and he was elected the head of the laboratory on a competitive basis. In this laboratory, he conducted scientific work related to the study of photophysical and photochemical processes of the visual carcass. During this period, the laboratory conducted research activities in cooperation with the leading scientific institutions of the USSR, as well as on the basis of self-financing, with the Fisheries Industry, the Defense Industry, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and other organizations.

In 1972, for the discovery of the role of selenium in the functional activity, of the photoreceptor, he honored the State Prize of Azerbaijan in the field of “Science and Technology”. In 1976 and 1978, he was awarded medals “For Labor Valor” and “For Labor Distinction” for his scientific achievements. In the same years, he was awarded the gold medal of the All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy “the Determination of the Regime of Storage of Fertilized Eggs”.

In 1969 he received an associate professor’s diploma in Biophysics. In 1983 he defended his thesis for a Doctor of Science degree (habulation) in Biophysics at the famous Biophysics Center (the current Institute of Biophysics and Bioengineering) in the city of Minsk. In 1987, the Higher Attestation Commission of the USSR awarded him the academic title of Professor of Biophysics. In 1991, he was transferred to the position of the head of the laboratory “Biostimulators” and the professor of the department “Physiology” at the Faculty of Biology of the Baku State University named after M.E. Rasulzadeh. In 1992, he was elected director of the same department on a competitive basis.

During 1996 to 2002 – Professor, he was a Head of the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Nigde and Canakkala in the Republic of Turkey. After returning to Azerbaijan since 2003, he held the post of head of the laboratory of “Experimental ophthalmology” at the Institute of Ophthalmology of the Ministry of Health. Since 2003 – Head of the department “Biophysics and Biochemistry” of the University “Odlar Yurdu”, in 2002-2008 – Professor, Head of the Department of “Biochemistry and Biophysics” at the International University, since November 2008 he worked as a leading scientist  in the laboratory of “Environmental Biophysics” of Institute of Physics of ANAS. He is a member of the Society of Biophysics of Azerbaijan and the Society of Biophysics of Russia. Since 2016, he has been delivering lectures to specialists in the Institute of Physics of ANAS, currently, he is working as a leading researcher in the laboratory of “Environmental Biophysics” at the Institute of Biophysics ANAS.

In the period of scientific activity in the republic and abroad, Jafarov has published 200 scientific works, he is an author of 6 monographs, 10 patents; he was the advisor of the 32 doctors of philosophy and supervisor 6 doctors of science. His main scientific achievements are: determining the role of mitochondria in the death of outer membrane cells; determination of the role of free radical oxidation of lipids in the activity of photoreceptors, preparation of optimal methods of conservation of biological objects and evaluation of their viability; problems of environmental pollution, etc.
