A scientific seminar on "Bioelectric signals: functions and pathophysiology" was held at the Institute of Biophysics

On September 21, 2023, at 3:00 PM, a scientific seminar titled "Bioelectric Signals: Functions and Pathophysiology" was held at the Institute of Biophysics of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The seminar began with opening remarks by the institute's director and corresponding member of the ANAS, Oktay Qasimov, who welcomed the participants and congratulated them on the victory of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in the Karabakh war. He expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the participants and the Azerbaijani people. He then mentioned that the seminar was dedicated to a highly relevant topic.

During the seminar, the Director of the "Signal Transmission in Cells" laboratory, Ph.D. Taleh Yusifov, made a presentation. In his presentation, he noted that:

  • Ion channels regulate the formation of bioelectric signals through the rapid flow of ions. The mechanism of bioelectric signal transmission regulates fundamental physiological processes in the organism, in conjunction with biochemical pathways.
  • It ensures the conductivity of nerve impulses, synaptic transmission, and the functioning of the heart and skeletal muscles.
  • It regulates blood flow, blood pressure, vascular permeability, and many other fundamental processes in the cardiovascular system.
  • Changes in bioelectric signals can create indicators of various serious diseases, including cancer.
  • Restoring the regulation of bioelectric function can be a new treatment strategy for cancer patients.

After the presentation, Prof. Rovshan Khalilov from the Biology Faculty of Baku State University, Executive Director of the Institute of Biophysics Ph.D. Karim Gasimov, Ph.D. Sevinc Jafarova, and Ph.D. Mursel Dadasov, as well as Matanat Bakhishova, the Chairperson of the Institute's Young Scientists and Specialists Council, shared their questions and thoughts related to the topic.

At the end of the seminar, the institute's director and corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Qasimov, thanked Ph.D. Taleh Yusifov for the interesting and informative presentation on behalf of the participants and the institute's leadership.
