The Next Meeting of the Scientific Council of the Biophysics Institute Held

On December 3, 2024, the next meeting of the Scientific Council of the Biophysics Institute under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan took place. The event was chaired by the Institute’s General Director, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Oktay Gasimov. Opening the meeting, Professor Gasimov greeted the participants, emphasized the role of the Scientific Council in the Institute’s research activities, and outlined the agenda.

The meeting continued with the presentation of the 2024 annual scientific and organizational reports from three laboratories: "Biophysics of Physicochemical Stress Factors," "Structure, Dynamics, and Function of Biomolecules," and "Molecular and Cellular Oncology." The heads of the laboratories—PhD in Biology, Assoc. Sevinj Jafarova, PhD in Biology Leylakhanım Malikova, and research scientist Matanat Bakhishova, one of the main executors of the research processes—delivered the reports. Each presentation covered the major scientific work and results achieved by the laboratories in 2024.

During the presentations, detailed information was provided about the research conducted in various directions. The "Biophysics of Physicochemical Stress Factors" laboratory studied the effects of environmental and industrial stress factors on biological systems, investigating changes at the molecular and cellular levels. The "Structure, Dynamics, and Function of Biomolecules" laboratory explored functional aspects of biomolecular structures, introducing several innovative approaches and preparing high-quality publications. Meanwhile, the "Molecular and Cellular Oncology" laboratory presented new approaches to better understand the molecular mechanisms of cancer cells, achieving significant results in this area.

It was noted that in 2024, researchers from all three laboratories published articles in internationally indexed, high-impact journals. These publications were recognized as indicators of the global acknowledgment of the research and the strengthening of Azerbaijan's position in the international scientific community. Additionally, the laboratories participated in grant projects supported by both local and international organizations. These projects not only provided financial support but also facilitated experience and knowledge exchange.

Subsequently, the 2024 activity report of the Young Scientists and Specialists Council of the Biophysics Institute was presented by the Council Chair, Matanat Bakhishova. She elaborated on events organized for the development of young researchers, projects implemented, and achievements attained. The report also detailed efforts to involve young people in scientific activities, increase their opportunities for international experience, and support innovative initiatives within the Institute. During the discussions, members of the Council proposed additional measures to enhance these efforts.

At the end of the meeting, Professor Oktay Gasimov held a vote to approve the presented reports. Members of the Scientific Council unanimously accepted the reports of the laboratories and the Young Scientists and Specialists Council.

The meeting concluded with discussions on several current issues. These included projects planned for the upcoming years, the expansion of international collaborations, the preparation of new grant proposals, and the implementation of special measures to support young researchers. Additionally, discussions were held on restructuring research processes to meet modern requirements, commercializing scientific achievements, and developing strategic plans to enhance the potential of young personnel. Participants offered specific proposals and took part in the decision-making process.
