November 10 is the World Science Day for Peace and Development
Every year on November 10, the World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated. This significant day was established at the UNESCO General Conference in 2001, as part of the commitments made during a joint session between UNESCO and the World Science Council held in Budapest in 1999. The purpose of this day is to emphasize the role of science in society, the importance of public participation in the discussion of scientific issues, and the relevance of science in daily life, as well as to ensure citizens are informed about scientific developments. Additionally, it aims to expand understanding of our planet and highlight the role of scientists in sustainable development. This day allows for exchanges on science and development from government officials to school students.
This year’s theme for the World Science Day emphasizes the role of fundamental sciences in achieving sustainable development. The events held on this day are also part of the International Year of Fundamental Sciences for Sustainable Development, which began on July 8, 2022.
Azerbaijan, a country that has made significant contributions to global science, has achieved major successes in the fields of science and education. One of the main directions of state policy is the consistent support for science and education and the preservation of scientific and technological potential. Key issues include the preparation of highly qualified personnel and increasing the prestige of scientists in society. The adoption of important decisions aimed at increasing the role of science and education in the national product, as well as directing capital resources to a rich scientific base and human potential, creates favorable conditions for expanding achievements in this field.
It should be noted that the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on “Measures for Improving Management in the Field of Science and Education” issued on July 28, 2022, has opened new reforms in the country. This Decree creates broad opportunities for the efficient organization of science management. The Presidential Decree of October 15, 2022, established the “Azerbaijan Science Fund” as a public legal entity. The purpose of the fund is to develop scientific activities, enhance the efficiency of research in various scientific fields, stimulate scientific research, and improve state support mechanisms and management in this field.
